US-Cambodian Economic and Trade Relations 1992-2004

Since the resumption of diplomatic relations with Cambodia in 1992, the United States has been at the forefront of Cambodian development. In 1996, President Clinton signed a bill formally extending Most Favored Nation (MFN) status to Cambodia. The US Government subsequently designated Cambodia as a beneficiary under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) in 1997. In 1999, Cambodia and the US signed a Bilateral Textile Agreement (BTA), a unique agreement that links labor standards to trade.

The BTA has been an unqualified success. It has boosted Cambodia’s image as a labor-friendly country and contributed significantly to its economic development by generating employment for over 250,000, mostly rural women, as well as providing significant amounts of foreign exchange. The BTA is responsible for a robust and booming garment industry with exports of $1.6 billion in 2003, representing some 40% of Cambodia’s nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 73% of Cambodia’s total exports. The US has been Cambodia’s single largest trading partner by far since 1998. Exports to the US totaled $1.5 billion in 2004, accounting for at least 70% of Cambodia’s total exports and over 35% of Cambodia’s entire GDP. US exports to the Cambodia have been minuscule in comparison, albeit increasing from approximately $20 million in 1999 to $59 million in 2004.

ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY

ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY

History of Regional Organization

The association of Southeast Asian Nations known as ASEAN was established by the declaration of Bangkok on August 8, 1967 that has five founding countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippine, Singapore, and Thailand. ASEAN was formed with the common attitude to oppose the expansion of influence of the super powers stemmed from important historical development of Southeast Asian countries. All of them (except Thailand) Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, were separated into North and South by the Cold war. Likewise, Malaysian, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, and Philippine has one once been the colonies of Western Power. Then they gained Independence at the end of the World War II. The period after WWII, Southeast Asian countries became an arena of ideological strife and struggle of the great powers between communist and liberal blocs. Thus, means to avoid external domination is to unite the countries in Southeast Asia into a regional organization by cooperating, strengthening economic, and pursuance of independence from foreign policy. These factors encouraged the five founder countries to discuss about forming ASEAN.

Sink or Swim: How Lessons from the Titanic Can Save Your Family Business
by:  Priscilla M. Cale, David C. Tate

Family-owned businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy, responsible for 65 percent of wages paid, adding 78 percent of all new jobs, and contributing over half of the nation's GDP. Unfortunately, less than one-third survive the transition from first to second generation of family ownership. Now more than ever, many family businesses are in danger of going under as rising health care costs, lack of access to capital, and increasing costs of doing business shrink profit margins. Sink or Swim: How Lessons from the Titanic Can Save Your Family Business provides critical strategies for identifying and managing risks—obvious and hidden—that threaten family business survival. In part 1 of the book, the authors relate the design, construction, and operation of the ill-fated Titanic to the challenges facing family-owned businesses today. Part 2 examines the five fatal flaws that contributed to Titanic's sinking and reveals how family firms can have the same vulnerabilities. The final section supplies guidance that will help family-run businesses avoid unanticipated tragedy.
