ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY

ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY

History of Regional Organization

The association of Southeast Asian Nations known as ASEAN was established by the declaration of Bangkok on August 8, 1967 that has five founding countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippine, Singapore, and Thailand. ASEAN was formed with the common attitude to oppose the expansion of influence of the super powers stemmed from important historical development of Southeast Asian countries. All of them (except Thailand) Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, were separated into North and South by the Cold war. Likewise, Malaysian, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, and Philippine has one once been the colonies of Western Power. Then they gained Independence at the end of the World War II. The period after WWII, Southeast Asian countries became an arena of ideological strife and struggle of the great powers between communist and liberal blocs. Thus, means to avoid external domination is to unite the countries in Southeast Asia into a regional organization by cooperating, strengthening economic, and pursuance of independence from foreign policy. These factors encouraged the five founder countries to discuss about forming ASEAN.

HOME

We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate.

The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being.

For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film.

Amazon.com:

For generations, lovers of the English language have turned to trusty copies of Fowler's to settle nagging grammatical questions, or, for true hard-core language junkies, for the sheer fun of reading H. W. Fowler's classic outrage contained in entries on "Hackneyed Phrases" or "Pedantic-Humour Words."

The New Fowler's Modern English Usage, the first revision in more than 30 years, has not arrived without controversy. Some language (and Fowler) purists complain that the book is too liberal at times, noting that usage is common as opposed to correct. Those points are debatable, and, indeed, they're what makes the book's nearly 900 pages so interesting to peruse. The currency of the new Fowler's extends to, in the entry on "Vogue Words," such novelties as "couch potato," "flavour of the month," "on a roll," and the notorious "parameter."

English Language Learners

English Language Learners (Issues That Concern You)
by:  Tamara Roleff

Mexican immigrants make up the largest group of immigrants in the United States and are often the focus of debates about English language learners and bilingual education. It is this inability to speak English—or at the very least, their poor understanding of written and spoken English—that fuels the debate over what steps private businesses and the government should take so that English language learners can communicate with English and non-English speakers.
The controversy starts in the schools with the question of whether students should be taught in bilingual or English immersion classrooms.
Opponents of bilingual education assert that immersion is the best way to learn, both school subjects and the English language. Immersion is just that—foreign-language students are completely immersed in English with all subjects taught solely in English.
Supporters of immersion teaching maintain that children learn to speak, read, write, and think in English very quickly, and usually within six months they become comfortable enough with their new language that they will start using English outside of the classroom.
